What is Lactoferrin?

When you hear “lactoferrin”, many people think of 2 things: milk (lactose) and iron (ferrin). In fact, this is almost right.

Lactoferrin is a proteinwhose main biological function is to bind and transportiron, an essential mineral that helps hemoglobin transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

An increase in the lactoferrin value in the stool can therefore be an indication of inflammation of the intestinal mucosa.

What is lactoferrin in breast milk?

Breast milk contains up to 15 lactoferrin (cow’s milk contains only 0.2 grams of lactoferrin per litre).
