What is Lactoferrin?
When you hear “lactoferrin”, many people think of 2 things: milk (lactose) and iron (ferrin). In fact, this is almost right.
Lactoferrin is a proteinwhose main biological function is to bind and transportiron, an essential mineral that helps hemoglobin transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
It is also known from breast milk (colostrum). The glycoprotein has become the focus of science because it is believed to be responsible for children who are breastfed have fewer infections, develop fewer allergies and have a stronger immune system.
The main biological function of lactoferrin is to help bind and transport iron,a vital mineral that helps hemoglobin transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. No matter how much iron is present in your body, if it cannot be stored and utilized, there may be a deficiency. You can eat lots of green leafy vegetables and/or lean red meat, which are natural sources of iron, but that doesn’t mean your body can absorb or process it.
Always very interesting for me.
What can I do if my body does not use iron properly?
Lactoferrin can help solve this dilemma by supporting the body’s natural feeding system and helping the bodyto better utilise and balance the iron.
Studies have shown that lactoferrin, as it is inherently iron-binding,has a positive effect on iron absorption, which in turn can increase iron levels in the blood.
Iron deficiency can lead to anemia, fatigue and poor blood circulation, as well as many other physical ailments. Women are most vulnerable to iron deficiency, as are people who are very active.
Lactoferrin can be a good solution.
Lactoferrin – man’s oldest friend – from birth.
Newborn animals are supplied with breast milk just like humans. The first milk, which is taken from the mother within 24 to 48 hours, is called colostrum. This yellowish-transparent milk contains growth substances as well as many antibodies (e.g. lactoferrin).
Lactoferrin and colostrum therefore have many advantages:
- Strengthens the intestinal flora
- Protects the intestinal wall
- ensures a good balance between beneficial and unfavourable bacteria in the intestine
- Supports and stimulates the immune system
- Helps to improve the optimized iron content in the blood
Dietary supplementcantity can help us:
Food offers us more than just the satisfaction of hunger and appetite. It provides the organism with essential nutrients. But even an average healthy diet is hardly enough to provide the body with what it actually needs for well-being. This is where dietary supplements come into play.
Lactoferrin also spares the digestive tract and thus supports the gastrointestinal tract with all its functions. Instead of the addition of elemental iron – as is found in virtually every iron preparation on the market – which can be shown to cause intestinal inflammation, lactoferrin helps the body to absorb the already existing one without distuning the stomach.
Lactoferrin is more bioavailable compared to other iron sources and allows for more efficient absorption of iron.
Which lactoferrin do you recommend?
We recommend lactoferrin from Nikkenbecause it improves the formulation of lactoferrin with four organic ingredients: organic inulin, organic rhodiola, organic ginger and organic yellow root
Organic inulin, organic ginger, organic turmeric and organic rhodiola have an antioxidant effect in combination with lactoferrin and have anti-inflammatory propertiesthat can support overall well-being.
Who is it recommended for?
Lactoferrin is particularly recommended for those who have been taking iron preparations for a long time and whose levels do not improve.
The body needs iron for blood formation. However, it is not always easy to adequately provide yourself with this vital trace element: it is estimated that 30 to 50 percent of people worldwide suffer from reduced care. In Europe, 10 to 15 percent of children are said to be affected.
Lactoferrin can improve usability, but is not an iron supplier itself.
How does this support lactoferrin?
However, this is not the only role of lactoferrin in the body. Its iron-binding properties give it several secondary functions:
- Strengthen your immune system. Lactoferrin is also essential for strengthening the defenses of your immune system. Lactoferrin deprives unwanted bacteria in the body of the nutrients they need for further spread and is able to provide your body with beneficial antioxidants, improve tissue oxygenation and promote the well-being of white blood cells.
- The immune protein is the focus of various scientific studies. Lactoferrin has been shown to have many properties, especially those related to immune system function:
- As part of the immune system, it influences inflammation regulation,
- it has antimicrobial properties
- Lactoferrin has a direct influence on the course of inflammation
- regulates the immune system
and shows anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
- An optimal iron supply can strengthen a weak immune system.
- Clear skin. If you have problems maintaining a healthy or clear skin, lactoferrin also works in reducing acne activity and preventing acne outbreaks.
What does lactoferrin indicate in the chair?
Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein with antibacterial effects. As part of the non-specific defense, it can be detected in various secretions such as tear fluid, saliva and breast milk. Lactoferrin is also present in intestinal mucus.
An increase in the lactoferrin value in the stool can therefore be an indication of inflammation of the intestinal mucosa.
What is lactoferrin in breast milk?
Breast milk contains up to 15 lactoferrin (cow’s milk contains only 0.2 grams of lactoferrin per litre).
For several years it has been possible to produce high-dose lactoferrin preparations (from cow’s milk) that can be taken as a supplement to the lactoferrin produced by the body itself.
