Sleep can be your superpower…

In order to maintain an optimal level of Active Wellness, we eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and drink PiMag® water. But it is even more important to sleep well and sufficiently! According to sleep and brain researcher Matt Walker, “Sleep is an indispensable biological necessity. Sleep is the Swiss Army knife of health.” 1 Humans are the only species that intentionally evade sleep, which has led to the health challenge of this century.

What are the benefits of an approximately eight-hour, restful sleep? Matt Walker points to studies that compared well-rested participants with participants suffering from sleep deprivation. The hippocampus in the brain of the well-rested subjects showed significant memory signals, but not in those suffering from sleep deprivation.

Why is that?

  • During sleep, the brain is prepared for learning activities.
  • During sleep, lasting memories of what they have learned are created.
  • Deep sleep acts as a transmission system for memories and learning content.

A disturbance of deep sleep can impair brain functions and thus lead to certain dysfunctions. The good news is that researchers can now study ways to improve this situation, as sleep loss is believed to affect every aspect of physiology. Here are some tips for restful sleep:

  1. If possible, always go to bed at the same time and get up again at the same time. The body appreciates regularity and a set schedule.
  2. Sleep in a cool room. To fall asleep and stay asleep, you need a body temperature that has dropped by two to three degrees. 18 °C is ideal for most people.
  3. If you can’t sleep, get out of bed and preferably go to another room. The bed should be associated with sleep, not with twisting and turning back and forth.
  4. Only go to bed when you are tired.
  5. Turn off all electronic devices. In other words, don’t fall asleep in front of the TV. Don’t leave your phone on all night so it can’t blink and vibrate.
  6. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks before bedtime, preferably a few hours before.
  7. Invest in comfortable bedding. Make sure your mattress has the necessary hardness to support your level of comfort.
